God's Warriors

God's Warriors

God’s Warriors is a three-part CNN documentary produced by Christiane Amanpour in which she compares the rise of religious fundamentalism as a political force in the world.[1] The documentary was filmed in the United States, Europe and Middle East. It focuses on the three major monotheistic religions of the world, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
The three chapters have been titled God’s Jewish Warriors, God’s Muslim Warriors, and God’s Christian Warriors.
The first describes the Jews who have forcefully pushed settlements into Israeli-occupied Palestine and the fund-raising in the United States that supports them, while the second presents issues of women’s rights under radical Islam and Sharia law. The final segment offers a view of the United States and its electoral system and the political influence of Christian religious leaders. fROM MONDOQT

...Meanwhile, back in New London, Fort Trumbull still awaits rebirth. Corcoran Jennison, the Boston-based developer set to do the do, is dragging their heels. (Again.) An 80 unit luxury housing development was supposed to be rising by now, on land once owned by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. But financing for speculative projects is tough to obtain in these subprime times. The New London Development Corporation (poodle to Connecticut’s Department of Economic and Community Development) controls the land and has given its OK for a 6 month delay. Albeit with stern provisos. Payments in lieu of taxes must be made. And should Corcoran Jennison not come up with financing, the ground lease will be terminated and a new developer sought. Which will mean more delay. But hey– at least Fort Trumbull is free of those pesky ex-property owners who didn’t understand the meaning of “public use”... CLICK HERE

New London voters elected five Democrats and two Republicans to the City Council in a four-party race that knocked two incumbents seeking re-election out of office.

Democrat Michael Buscetto III received the most votes of any candidate in all seven districts and the absentee ballots with a total of 2,492. Almost two-thirds of those who voted cast ballots for Buscetto.
Well, that's all well and good but...
Will he be our next mayor?  Will it matter what two-thirds of the voters had to say?
Or will the next mayor, albeit a ceremonial position be chosen by the Democratic Town Committee as usual?

What a fascinating blog this is.
Had it not been for my good friends
at Google, I would not have known
it existed.

From New London Wine Blogspot -

Many of you know that we own the
building that Parade News is located
in. Parade News and the Condon
family have provided New London
with newspapers and magazines,
tobacco and impulsive necessities of
all types for over fifty years.
Parade News is a New London
landmark
- it has been in the same
location since the 1950's - So,when
the family decided recently to retire
the business, many people wondered
what's going to happen? Where will
we get our newspapers and fine cigars?
Where will we get that copy of
European Men's Vogue for the train
ride into The City?
Where will I be able to find those
outlawed spiced, clove & honey cigarette's
that are all the rage on The Continent?

The answer my friends is don't worry -
we will carry on the proud tradition -
we will not let the changing hands of
time shut off the lights on a New London
tradition. All of the Big City newspapers
and magazines, fine cigars and tobacco,
candy & chocolate, nuts & snacks, will be
right there where you expect them to be.
Your routine will not have to change. We
will update things a bit - and make the
whole thing as user-friendly as possible.
All of your requests, comments, and
suggestions are welcome - and now is the
time to let us know - and please spread
the word.

Areas are shaded with varying

blocks of address space are
more transparent, which also
makes them darker. Thus,
varying shades of a color
indicate different-sized blocks

Author Hopes To Plant Seeds Of Resurgence For Backyard Gardens
By Megan Bard
Published on 11/4/2007
New London — If Americans are
to be successful with the preser-
vation of open space and saving
what's left of the biodiversity of
the planet, says award-winning
author Patricia Klindienst, they
must adjust their perception of the common backyard garden.

Klindienst told a group of
40 people gathered in Connecticut College's Blaustein Humanities
Center Saturday, “The idea of the
garden has been stripped of its
cultural identity.”...
Once inspired, the rest of the
seminar provided people like
Claire Calabretta with some
advice on how to return to the
garden and manage its growth.

“We all have these patches of
earth we call gardens, but I just
happen to have no idea what
I'm doing,” Calabretta said,
smiling.

During her nearly hour-long
address on “Staying Connected
to the Earth,” Klindienst shared
excerpts from her recent book,
“The Earth Knows My Name:
Food, Culture, and Sustainability
in the Gardens of Ethnic Americans.”..

“The hope is just to start,” she said, “to get out and dig up a piece of soil and plant something.”

A Smarter Lawn
Begin by setting aside an area of lawn for planting shrubs and trees that will attract wildlife.

Plant native species, which will begin to decrease the size of your lawn, and, in time, will shade out the grass. (next column)

Continue to mow around your plantings and add leaves or wood chips to smother the grass, or begin to plant ground cover.

Convert a portion of your present lawn to a meadow by mowing it just once a year and planting colorful native perennials. The diversity of plants waiting to flower will amaze you, especially if you haven't been using weed killers or fertilizers.

Convert a portion of your lawn to a vegetable garden and/or small orchard. Perennial and annual flower borders lend diversity and require less maintenance than lawns.

Set aside an area for a solar clothes dryer.

Use native species since they are adapted to your region and require minimal maintenance.

Plant ground covers in former lawn areas, especially on steep slopes where mowing is difficult. Plant the borders of your property with trees and shrubs. This will give you greater privacy and permit your naturalistic landscaping to develop with minimal interference from neighbors.

THE GARDE ARTS CENTER

The Garde Arts Center, Inc. (GAC) is a non-profit cultural organization created in 1985 by a regional, volunteer network of leaders in business, arts, education and philanthropy. Their mission was to save and transform the historic Garde theatre, one of the few remaining historic movie palaces in Connecticut, and create a performing arts center in the heart of downtown New London serving Southeastern Connecticut, a region rich in geographic, economic, ethnic and cultural diversity.

NOTICE: DON'T BOTHER TO GO TO NLDC'S WEBSITE.  LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE THEY'RE INVOLVED IN, IT'S STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION WITH NO END IN SIGHT.

Today, The Garde owns and operates a complex of four adjacent buildings in downtown New London, the centerpiece of which is the 1,472-seat Garde Theatre, an historic movie/vaudeville house (1926). Built in 1926 during the golden era of the motion pictures and vaudeville theatres, the recently restored Moroccan interior of the Garde Theatre, along with the new seats and state-of-the-art stage equipment, provide a very audience-friendly theatre venue in a warm and beautiful atmosphere.

From the Royal Caribbean International Site
New London Connecticut
Given its name, it should come as no surprise that this lovely seaport city sits at the mouth of the Thames River. And like its namesake across the pond, it's as lively a waterway today as ever. From its roots as a Revolutionary War naval base to a 19th century world-class whaling port, New London has thrived over the years as a major shipping and trading center. Today, you can see evidence of the city's rise to prominence in the many fine examples of Greek Revival, Gothic and Victorian architecture that line its streets. Among these is Monte Christo Cottage, where Eugene O'Neill, the father of American drama, lived and wrote his Pulitzer Prize-winning "Long Day's Journey Into Night." But whether you're a fan of literature or architecture or just coastal New England ambience, you'll find a lot to enjoy about this charming seaside town.

Aside from a few differences of opinion, which is putting it mildly, we do have a lovely town.  With any luck at all, our elected officials will refrain from destroying anymore of it.
